Helsinkiläinen defunensemble on konsertoinut kaksitoistavuotisen taipaleensa aikana jo n. 120 eri yhteydessä – vieraillen omien konserttiensa ohella lähes 50 eri festivaalilla/konserttisarjassa 13 eri maassa, mukaan lukien Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, ISCM Tallinn, November Music ’s-Hertogenbosch, dOCUMENTA Kassel, Flow Festival Helsinki, KLANG Copenhagen, Chiffren Kiel, BIFEM Bendigo, Kontraklang Berlin, Festival Loop Brussels, Helsingin juhlaviikot, Vertixe Sonora, SLÁTUR Reykjavík, Nordic Music Days, Musica nova Helsinki, ME_MMIX Palma de Mallorca, Musiikin aika Viitasaari, KLANG Helsinki, New Directions Piteå ja AFEKT Tallinn/Tartu. Kantaesityksiä yhtye on tuonut maailmaan jo puolisen sataa, mm. säveltäjiltä Peter Ablinger, Alexander Schubert, Christian Winther Christensen, Hikari Kiyama, Timothy Page, Jan Anderzén, Asta Hyvärinen, Kimmo Kuokkala, Riikka Talvitie, Jarkko Hartikainen ja Veli-Matti Puumala.

Huilisti Hanna Kinnusen, klarinetisti Mikko Raasakan, pianisti Emil Holmströmin, sellisti Markus Hohdin, ääniteknikkojen Timo Kurkikangas ja Anders Pohjola sekä säveltäjä Sami Klemolan muodostama defunensemble on luonut kekseliäitä yhteistyöprojekteja myös mm. seuraavien taiteellisten partnerien kanssa: Islaja, M.A. Numminen, cellF-neurosyntetisaattori, Tapani Rinne & Tuomas Norvio, Ensemble Adapter, nykysirkusryhmä Circo Aereo, Helsingin kamarikuoro, NYKY Ensemble, Pink Twins ja KOELSE.

DACAPO

Founded in 1972, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra – Rovaniemi City Orchestra is the northernmost professional chamber orchestra in Finland and indeed in the entire EU.  The orchestra has 18 full-time members and its Artistic Director is conductor John Storgårds. The orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor is pianist, conductor and composer Olli Mustonen.

Based at Korundi House of Culture in Rovaniemi, the orchestra is a regional orchestra that regularly tours the Province of Lapland, but also performs elsewhere in Finland and along the Cap of the North. The orchestra has performed at festivals such as the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Helsinki Festival and the Korsholma Music Festival. Abroad, the orchestra has visited Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, Germany, Russia and Algeria, with the latest tours taking the orchestra to Hungary and Canada.  In 2014, the orchestra performed at the legendary BBC Proms festival in London as the first chamber orchestra from Finland.

The repertoire of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra reflects our time. The programme includes works by contemporary composers, without forgetting the more classical repertoire and rare gems from different periods. The orchestra has given first performances of works by many prominent composers. Distinguished guest performers have included Soile Isokoski, Håkan Hardenberger, Christian Tetzlaff, Nicholas Daniel, Nicholas Kraemer, Piers Adams, Colin Currie, Sabine Meyer, Benjamin Schmid, Kirill Gerstein and Tuomas Katajala. The orchestra has collaborated with the BBC Philharmonic orchestra, among others.

In addition to chamber concert experiences, the orchestra holds final rehearsals that are open to the public as well as artist meetings between the orchestra’s musicians, visitors and audience. Concerts in villages and at schools, music sessions with the audience and contacts with music lovers are also important to the orchestra. Commitment to music is reflected in the orchestra’s ability to perform jazz, tango and world music alongside wonderful classical works.

The work and recordings of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra have gained recognition. For example, the orchestra’s recording of the Chamber Symphonies of Vagn Holmboe received rave reviews and was a nominee for the 2013 Gramophone Award. The recording of Kalevi Aho’s concertos for theremin and horn, in turn, received the distinguished German ECHO Klassik award in 2015. The latest release of Hans Abrahamsen’s Schnee was nominated as finalist for the 2022 Gramophone Award and is nominated for ICMA 2023 Award.

KRISHNA NAGARAJA
Violinist, violist, composer, arranger, formerly also singer and beatboxer, Krishna Nagaraja has always approached music from many different directions. Over the years, his musical path led him to the baroque violin and viola, performing with renowned groups in his native Italy and abroad. His passion for traditional music also steered him towards Irish, Scottish, Breton and Nordic folk music. In 2012 he moved to Helsinki to attend a Master’s Degree in Global Music (GLOMAS) at the Sibelius Academy where he experimented with the interaction between musical genres and styles, mixing folk with baroque and contemporary music in original arrangements and compositions. This originated projects such as Brú, a kaleidoscopic international group whose leadership has brought his music to several European festivals.

Krishna has recently completed an artistic PhD at the Sibelius Academy focusing on the hybridisation of several musical genres using composition as a tool. The last research year focused on Norwegian folk music and culminated in the two compositions included in the CD ”Tales from Norway”, his first release as a composer and as a solo Hardanger fiddler.

META4
Meta4, formed in 2001, is one of the most internationally successful Finnish string quartets. In 2004 it won the first prize in the International Shostakovich Quartet Competition in Moscow and was also awarded a special prize for the best Shostakovich interpretation. The quartet enjoyed continued success in 2007, when it won the first prize in the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. Later that year the Finnish Minister of Culture awarded Meta4 with the annual Finland Prize in recognition of an international breakthrough. Meta4 was selected as a BBC New Generation Artist for 2008– 2010 and in 2013 the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation awarded the quartet with a special prize in recognition of its work.

Meta4 performs regularly in key music capitals and concert halls around the world including Wiener Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall and King’s Place in London, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Cité de la Musique in Paris and Stockholms Konserthus, and has also toured in Australia. Furthermore, Meta4 served as the Artistic Director of Oulunsalo Music Festival between 2008 and 2011 and was the quartet-in-residence at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in 2008–2017.

Meta4 published three CDs with the label Hänssler Classics: the recording of Haydn’s String Quartets op. 55 1–3 (2009) was awarded the esteemed Echo Klassik Award in 2010; Shostakovich’s String Quartets 3, 4 & 7 (2012) received the 2012 Record of the Year award from the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and the Emma prize (the Finnish Grammy) in the category of the Classical Album of the Year; Bartók’s String Quartets 1 & 5 were the last release with the label in 2014. The quartet has also realised an album of Kaija Saariaho’s chamber music works (Ondine, 2013) and an LP of Sibelius’s String Quartet ‘Voces Intimae’ (Berliner Meister Schallplatten, 2013). The most recent albums were published by BIS Records: the recording of octets by Mendelssohn and Enescu with the Gringolts Quartet was released in 2020 and fall 2021 saw the release of Oceano, Chamber Music by Sebastian Fagerlund.

STOCKHOLM DIARY

ALBA RECORDS

Vuonna 1972 perustettu Keski-Pohjanmaan Kamariorkesteri (KPKO) kuuluu kansainvälisesti tunnetuimpiin suomalaisorkestereihin. Perustajansa, kapellimestari Juha Kankaan johdolla orkesteri loi kunnianhimoisen profiilin, jonka tavaramerkkejä ovat herkästi reagoiva, dynaaminen yhteissointi ja laaja ohjelmisto barokista tähän päivään. Juha Kangas toimi orkesterin taiteellisena johtajana vuoden 2008 loppuun saakka ja on nykyisin sen kunniakapellimestari. Monikymmenvuotinen yhteistyö säveltäjä Pehr Henrik Nordgrenin (1944–2008) kanssa on yksi esimerkki yhteistyökumppanuuksista, joille KPKO:n menestys on rakentunut.

Orkesterin aktiivinen rooli oman aikansa musiikin tekijänä on tuottanut yli 190 kantaesitystä, joista monet ovat orkesterin tilauksia. Kotimaisten säveltäjien lisäksi tiiviitä yhteyksiä on luotu Pohjoismaiden ja Baltian säveltäjiin. Laajaa kansainvälistä arvostusta nauttivalle orkesterille on myönnetty muun muassa Pohjoismaiden neuvoston musiikkipalkinto vuonna 1993.

Euroopan lisäksi orkesteri on konsertoinut Japanissa ja New Yorkissa. Sakari Oramon kauden (2013–2019) päätyttyä Keski-Pohjanmaan Kamariorkesterin taiteelliseksi johtajaksi kutsuttiin ruotsalainen viulutaiteilija Malin Broman. Solistina, kamarimuusikkona ja musiikin johtajana ansioitunut Broman aloitti kautensa syksyllä 2019.
